weekend at catalina island.

I’ve wanted to go to Catalina island for a long time. On a good day you can see its outline from Ruby’s in Huntington Beach, and it’s always held a bit of mystique and grandeur for me, so when I was invited to visit along with Marie and Ciaran’s families by the Santa Catalina Island company, I didn’t hesitate to say yes. I may have even said, *heck yes!*.

We took the Catalina Express bright and early out of a cloudy Long Beach harbor {the boat is cold so bring a jacket!} ending up at Catalina’s largest town, Avalon an hour-and-a-half later to beautiful sunny skies and clear blue ocean as far as the eye can see.

We walked from the dock to Hotel Atwater where we ditched our bags and headed off to lunch at Coney Island West.

I can’t find the photos but Victor figured Catalina was as good a place as any to teach Pigeons how to eat french fries out of his mouth, to the delight of the children {mine and Momfluential’s}. Nice.

Once everyone was fed we headed out on a bus tour of the island. Catalina is actually a lot bigger than I thought it would be, and there’s a lot of *interior* land for things like a hospital, golf course, houses for locals, and a school for the kids who live there year-round.

I didn’t know this but Ciaran’s son did {who incidentally is the exact same age as C}; there are Bison on Catalina Island. Just another random tidbit learned on the interior bus tour.

After the bus tour we all crashed before dinner at The Lobster Trap with all our families. Chaos at its best.

The rest of the weekend was filled with sand, water, and fun. Catalina has got its own cool vibe going on. It was what I imagine the Greek Isles to be: little houses dotting the steep hillsides, all centered around the cute little town with the ocean lapping at its feet. It’s absolutely beautiful, perfect for snorkeling, kayaking, swimming, walking, and eating. Obviously eating.

I was able to have a *girls night out* with Ciaran and Marie, watching the latest movie at the Casino which is a whole experience in and of itself.

We played at Descanso beach, had a picnic dinner under the stars {something you cannot miss if you go to Catalina}, saw Flying Fish {I told Marie’s husband Jordan “it was an experience on my bucket list I didn’t know I needed to have!}, looked at the California State saltwater fish on the Underwater Boat Tour and the highlight for me? The best of the best? A massage from Deanna Stone. Holy Hannah. I’ve had a lot of massages in my day but hers was so unbelievable I had to hold back tears, no joke.

I had so much fun I can’t wait to go back, and if you ever have the chance you have to go. A big thank you to the Santa Catalina Island Company, we had a ball!

Have you been? Do you want to? Tell me what you’d do if first once you set foot on the island.

questions of a first time mom.

I received an email from a reader who’s about to become a first-time mom and has a barrage of questions, {of course! didn’t you have a million before your baby arrived?}. She doesn’t want to divulge her identity but needs some help, so I thought it’d be great to open up her questions to you, my seasoned veterans of motherhood. What do you think? Let’s be sisters in the motherhood and help *First Time Mommy* with our sage wisdom.

  1. What is your advice for the best baby carrier? Mobi, Baby Bjorn, Snugli?
  2. What about a diaper pail? Is it necessary? Do I go with the Diaper Genie, Diaper champ?

Ladies, gents? What do you think?

I don’t think a diaper pail is mandatory, personally. I just buy these little bags at the dollar store to wrap each diaper individually. It does about the same job as the sausage maker aka Diaper Genie.

My advice about a baby carrier depends on your personality. Are you someone who likes to be touched or are you a little hands-off? I’m personally very touchy feely, but you knew that already. I love having my babies snuggled in tight right in front of me.

blue sea lodge, san diego.

After our marvelous adventures in Huntington Beach we headed to San Diego. I love all the jokes the movie Madagascar makes about San Diego. It really does seem like a surreal place, all gorgeousness and ocean and warm weather.

We stayed at the Blue Sea Lodge, which is another Pacifica Hotel like the Sandcastle Inn where we stayed in Pismo Beach. And just like the Sandcastle, the Blue Sea Lodge is right on the beach. So close to the beach in fact, the little surfer boys come use the hotel pool as a rinsing off spot after a day in the waves. I don’t blame them one bit. There’s nothing more tantalizing than hopping in a pool or hot tub while looking at the ocean, a favorite activity of mine on this trip.

After we landed in the hotel and unpacked the bags {the kids were hopping one foot to the other waiting to get out the door and onto the sand} we set out in search of food to eat on the beach for a sunset picnic. After some advice from twitter and yelp* we ended up getting take-out from a delicious, hole-in-the-wall, Mexican restaurant not a block from the hotel. Seriously, yum.

We ate on the beach, no shoes, no shirt {for C at least} while we watched the sun go down. I’m jealous of myself just writing this, honest. The beach in front of the hotel was perfect for families with little ones, shallow-ish, mellow waves, and lots of sand for castles.

We played until it was dark and time for bed, which as horribly mean parents we did as soon as we could because the hotel was amazing and scored us a family pass for Sea World the following day. I mean, come on. Sometimes I love my life.

Victorian Inn, Monterey California

by Allison July 12, 2009 Travel

While in Monterey we stayed at the Victorian Inn. And we loved it. The Victorian Inn is a charming hotel just a couple of streets up from Cannery Row and the Monterey Bay Aquarium and only a few walking blocks from Fisherman’s Wharf. It was a great location. Not too crowded or noisy, but close [...]
