Old Wives’ Tales

Mike and I have our ultrasound appointment on Wednesday. We’re going to find out the sex of our baby! And of course, there’s not one or another that we’d prefer. We’ll be happy to have a boy for a lot of reasons and happy to have a girl for just as many great reasons. So I thought that I’d share some of the fun with you, and you can weigh in on what you think we might be having. To help you out, here’s a list of old wives’ tales and how I compare. Good luck! Vote in the sidebar, and as always, feel free to add comments about your own experiences with old wives’ tales!

**********

My baby’s heart rate is above 140. It must be a girl!

My hands are soft, not dry. It must be a girl!

I don’t crave many new things (I’ve always indulged my cravings, so I think that my body just got used to the royal treatment), but I’ve always craved sweeter foods rather than saltier foods. And it must be said that I’ve been craving fruit more often than not lately. So it must be a girl!

I grab the handle not the body of the mug. It must be a boy!

I don’t feel clumsy. I don’t drop things or trip over things. It must be a girl!

There’s a wives’ tale about breasts… do I have to admit this one? My left breast is slightly larger (“Lefty is hefty; Righty is lighty,” I tell my husband). But it always is. But apparently during pregnancy it means… It must be a girl!

Furthermore… my breasts haven’t grown much during pregnancy. It must be a boy!

My skin hasn’t broken out. It must be a boy!

My mood and emotions are very stable. It must be a boy!

I refuse to eat the heel of a loaf of bread (always have…). It must be a girl!

I show the palms of my hands when asked to show my hands. It must be a girl!

I’m carrying the baby low. It must be a boy!

My leg hair isn’t growing faster. It must be a girl!

I don’t have colder feet during my pregnancy. It must be a girl!

I’m looking good during pregnancy. It must be a boy!

I don’t like to drink orange juice. It must be a boy!

I am not having headaches. It must be a girl!

I had no morning sickness. It must be a boy!

**********

So there’s the evidence before you. One thing is for certain. The old wives’ tales (which indicate a stronger possibility of a girl) have a 50 percent chance of being right. Unless, of course, I’m having twins and getting one of each. I’ll update on Wednesday!

I like that so many of the “unpleasant” things like morning sickness and breaking out relate to having a girl. Are females always this unpleasant?

So…my boobs got huge, my hands were soft, I carried the baby very high, I loved orange juice and I had some morning sickness. I had a boy.
